What is sport climbing?
Sport climbing is a sport in which the climber uses his/her own strength, endurance and knowledge of climbing techniques to climb up a rock, and technical devices are used only to prevent injuries.
Sport climbing can be defined in two categories.
One category is competitive sport climbing, which takes place on artificial and natural rocks, outdoors or in the gym. The second category is climbing sport climbing routes on natural rocks.
These two categories bear the common name of sport climbing.
Who can engage in sport climbing?
Anybody can engage in sport climbing. Climbing is an innate biotic-motoric action, and some of us have never stopped climbing ever since we've been learning to crawl and walk. There are no restrictions for sport climbing, nobody is too young or too old.
Is it not dangerous?
Just like anything in life, sport climbing can also be dangerous if certain rules are not obeyed. But if a person completes a course, follows the rules and sticks to the knowledge learned in the course, climbing can become a very satisfying and safe sport. All equipment used in sport climbing is made by strict quality standards and ensures climbers a hundred percent of safety.
Do I have to get any kind of schooling?
In order to be able to climb independently, you have to attend a sport climbing course in one of the sport climbing clubs which have certified instructors. There you will be able to complete the training and become a sport climber. The purpose of the school/course is to teach you how to climb safely.
Where and when can I go climbing?
We climb in the whole Istrian region: Pula, Rovinj, Dvigrad, Čepić, Lim Channel... depending on the season, the orientation of the rock, and time of day.
How much time is needed to become a good climber?
There is no a certain time, it depends exclusively on your ambitions and the number of training and climbing days. With a good instructor and coach you can acquire basic techniques in approximately six months. However, it takes a little bit longer to build climbing endurance and to become a top competitor.
Is sport climbing an expensive sport?
After the initial investment in the course, which costs about 150 €, it is necessary to invest in your equipment that can be purchased for around € 300, depending on models and manufacturers. If we take into account the possibilities and the satisfaction that sport climbing provides, it is not much of an investment. Most of us spend money on cars or mobile phones anyway, and they cannot give us the satisfaction that climbing can.
